Elimu ya Kenya School, located in the Bombo area of Kisauni Sub-County, Mombasa, recently marked its 15th anniversary, celebrating a remarkable journey of transforming the lives of many underprivileged children through education.
Founded with the support of the Education4Kenya organization, a German partner organization that has been championing Kenyan education for over 20 years, the school has become a beacon of hope for countless students seeking a brighter future.
The school’s establishment was made possible through a collaboration between Elimu ya Kenya Organization and Education4Kenya, with additional backing from the Federal Government of Germany.
Since its inception in 2010, Elimu ya Kenya School has provided free education to students, empowering them not only with knowledge but also with skills that enable them to improve their living standards and contribute positively to their communities.
Ms. Lilian Musungu, the Director of Elimu ya Kenya School and Chairperson of Elimu ya Kenya Organization, spoke to the media during the anniversary celebrations.
Reflecting on the school’s impact, she highlighted the success stories of its graduates. “Since 2010, we have seen many of our students transition to high school and university, with over 200 students graduating to high schools, universities and various job opportunities. Notably, one of our graduates even received a scholarship to study in Germany,” she said.
Ms. Musungu emphasized the transformative role education plays in shaping a child’s future, urging parents to prioritize their children’s education despite the challenges posed by the high cost of living.
She stressed that education is the key to unlocking opportunities for the next generation and improving their standard of living.
Mr. Gunter Nehrig, Chairman of Education4Kenya, Germany, said since its establishment in 2005.
The organization’s primary goal has always been to provide children from impoverished families in Mombasa with access to quality education, thereby improving their lives and creating better opportunities for the future.
“Our mission has always been to provide children from poor backgrounds with the education they need to improve their lives and contribute to their communities,” said Nehrig.
Through the support of generous donors from Germany, Education4Kenya has been able to establish various educational programs, including the creation of clubs and the introduction of specialized curricula. In addition to traditional subjects, the organization has emphasized teaching science-related subjects, computer skills, and technical training, such as woodwork and tailoring. This approach equips students not only with academic knowledge but also practical skills to help them secure employment or start their own businesses.

Nehrig further emphasized the importance of equipping students with the skills necessary to succeed in Kenya, noting that the country is full of opportunities for those who are well-prepared. “If children are equipped with the right skills, they can find ample opportunities right here in Kenya, rather than feeling the need to go abroad,” he said.
Mr. Stephen Ndolo, a board member at Elimu ya Kenya School, has called on more sponsors to support the school’s initiative of providing education to underprivileged students. He also urged the county government and the Ministry of Education to collaborate with the school in improving its infrastructure to enhance learning conditions for the students.
Faith Chemutai, a beneficiary of Elimu ya Kenya School since grade 2, is now pursuing a degree at Kabianga University. She credits the school’s support for helping her gain both academic knowledge and practical skills, which have enabled her to avoid early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and crime.
Faith encourages other young people to embrace education, despite challenges, to improve their futures and change the narrative in their communities.
