Mombasa-based journalists celebrated their end-of-year party in style as they met to reflect and reminisce on the year 2024.

United under the umbrella of the Mombasa Press Club, the scribes put their best foot forward as they wined and danced at a colourful party held at the Little Theatre Club in Mombasa.

Speaking during the celebrations, Mombasa UDA nominated Senator Miraj Abdillahi lauded the club for its effort in uniting Mombasa-based media practitioners.

She also promised to advocate for the welfare of journalists as the vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on ICT.

“Journalists are important in society as they play a key role in informing the masses. I am indebted to the media, who have played a big role in my political journey, coming from a humble background to now being a senate member,” said Miraj.

She challenged the journalists to report positively about Mombasa and the country, which would entrench patriotism and attract investments.

“In my capacity as the vice chairperson of the senate committee on ICT, I will continue pushing the agenda of improving the welfare of our journalists in the country,” she said.

Representing the County government of Mombasa, the county executive for Lands, Mohammed Hussein, lauded the transformative work Mombasa journalists have done in positively reporting the county, which has seen an influx of visitors this festive season.

He congratulated the club on the milestones achieved since its inception in March 2024 and promised that the county government of Mombasa, under the leadership of Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, will continue working closely with journalists to foster a conducive reporting environment.

“As the county government of Mombasa, we value the work that you do, and I assure you that we support your work and that our doors are open for you anytime you need our assistance,” Hussein said.

Also present at the event were representatives from the Media Council of Kenya, patrons of all press clubs across the country, and partners, including Little Theatre Club Mombasa and Human Rights Agenda (HURIA).

Mombasa Press Club chairperson Omar Shungu reiterated the club’s commitment to addressing the welfare of members, promising them better things in 2025.

“Since our inception in March, the club’s leadership has made tremendous efforts to gain visibility, and I can assure you that we will have a lot installed for you in 2025. Just watch this space,’ said Shungu.”
