The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Traffic Police, Mombasa County Government, and Bloomberg Philanthropies for Global Road Safety have jointly launched a campaign to promote road safety during the festive season.
The campaign, unveiled at Likoni Caltex along the busy Likoni-Lunga Lunga Road, aims to educate road users on the importance of adhering to traffic rules to prevent road crashes.
Speaking during the launch, NTSA Coast Region Deputy Manager John Parteroi expressed concern over the rising number of road crash fatalities, particularly during the holiday period. He revealed that by the end of November this year, 4,282 people had died in road crashes across the country. Among these, over 1,600 were pedestrians and more than 900 were boda boda riders, representing a higher death toll compared to the same period last year.
“I appeal to all citizens to exercise caution during this time of year and follow traffic rules to save lives. Avoid drunk driving, and for pedestrians, please observe safety measures,” urged Parteroi.
He further emphasized NTSA’s commitment to cracking down on traffic violations, stating, “We will maintain a strong presence on the roads, especially along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway, to ensure vehicles comply with safety standards. Only licensed Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) will be allowed to carry passengers, and private vehicles engaging in such activities will face the law.”
The Mombasa-Malindi Road, recently expanded, was highlighted as a particularly problematic route, with frequent cases of overspeeding by motorists.
Vipul Patel, Coordinator of Bloomberg Philanthropies for Global Road Safety, underscored the need for behavior change among road users.
“Our focus is on promoting behavior change. Slowing down and following traffic rules are critical to preventing unnecessary loss of life,” said Patel.
He added that the campaign would continue as part of broader efforts to raise public awareness and reduce road crashes.
This initiative is expected to reinforce road safety measures, ensuring safer travels during the festive season.
